Essay 2 Explaining a Concept; Draft 1 - 1057 Words

Wendy Gomez Professor Slusser English 101 February 27, 2012 A Guide for the Ultimate Vacation We’ve all dreamt about our favorite getaway vacation at the ultimately lowest price possible, but have we ever achieved it The next couple of paragraphs will give you some insight as to how to get the best vacation possible at the lowest price. The first step is choosing your destination. Choosing your destination might not be a big deal if you already have your mind set on where you would like to go. If you have many options to choose from, here are some tips to narrow your options. Once you’ve narrowed down your destinations, research your top three or four preferred spots. Find out when the ideal time to would be, or when it is not†¦show more content†¦Something that was recommended for me to do was go to setting on your internet page, click ‘Cache Operations’, click ‘Clear Cookie Cache’ and ‘Clear History’. This will clear the computer’s memory of your searches and you’re guaranteed the lowest possible price, according to computer techs. Besides, what’ve you got to loose? The third step would be to reserve the hotel. For reserving the hotel, the same steps that applied for the flight, can apply here. If traveling with a group of people on a budget, you have to be aware of the fact that hotels will not charge for a group of 2-3. Anything more than that and you will get charge for each person. To get the most for your money, reserve a hotel that is close to all the main attractions, that way, if everything is within walking distance, you will not have to spend money on extra transportation or gas and that would put extra money in your pocket. The final step would be: save, save save! Saving money is essential to any vacation. Research how much the main attractions would be and estimate how much you would spend on attractions, food, and transportation. Buying your airplane ticket and reserving your hotel early enough, will allow you to save more money so that you can spend more. Try not to eat out as much, pack your own lunch. If possible, put off small one or two hour trips until your vacation. The less you spend, the more you can save. Women Should Be in the Maliltary Free Essays

Yes, women should serve in the military. Women can provide administrative support instead of being in combat positions. With the help of technology and computers, women would be able to help protect their countries and their loved ones living in their countries even without going to battlefields to fight and kill. We will write a custom essay sample on Women Should Be in the Maliltary or any similar topic only for you Order Now So, why shouldn’t women serve NS? They should be allowed in combat. They should be allowed to be in combat because it is their life’s choice, so if they want to die in battle, fighting for our country they should be allowed to do that. It’s their freedom to help their country and they have every bit as good of stamina as men do, so you can’t say that men are more robust. They aren’t born like that and neither are women, they have to work at it and they will achieve it. I think that Women Should. I think that women should be allowed to join the army. That women are slightly weaker physically, does not prevent them to be brave and that they will help other people in war zones and they will bombard their homeland as any other. It is not harder for a woman to kill a man. It depends on how well they are prepared and how much you care about the issue, and who says women can not be involved? Never underestimate what a women is capable of. Yes, women are not as strong as men. But they sure can do the job. Everyone judges just because they think a women can’t do a man’s job which isn’t true. Women should be able to do what they want and the way they want to do it. Underestimating a women shouldn’t even be something considered. We can fight, we can give our nation pride! Women are no different. Women are no different in combat than men. They may not be men but they can fight just like if they put their hard work into it. They are hard working. They can protect themselves and they can act to the best interest in the wars. They work just as hard. Women are sometimes much braver than men. Those women who have had children have pulled through the pain of giving birth, which men do not know about. That means that the women are much braver than the men. Thus maybe in a war those women that are shot can continue to strive and defend the country better than the men. Don’t underestimate women. If women want to go to combat, then they’re already aware of what they are going to face with. There is no need to underestimate them. Let the females pave the path for the males who even wish to have a position in the military. Women and men are equally made despite our reproductive organs. Women should be allowed. Women should be allowed because just because we are smaller and maybe just a little bit less stronger then men shouldn’t mean that we can’t fight. Men have weak points that women don’t, and if they train hard enough they could be skilled with a hand knife. This country wouldn’t be free if they didn’t let us fight for our country. Also women have the same rights as men. If you can, and want to, then do so! Most of the arguments against are based on old stereotypes which have no basis in reality. People erroneously focus on gender instead of individual differences. Whilst some men are not up to army life, there are some women who couldn’t hack it either. Women are better at endurance than men, are better able to manage pain. They are also better communicators. Lots of women are able to pass the training and are up to the challenge of warfare. There is a lengthy history of women in the military dating back hundreds of years. It seems that only in more recent years have women been deterred from pursuing active, aggressive roles because some narrow minded people think it’s unladylike. We’re just as good as men. I am as physically capable as most men, and more so intellectually. I don’t see why I should be excluded from my chosen career path. Plus, women have been serving on the front lines since as early as WWI, and probably earlier. They just haven’t been recognized for what they’ve do Women are just as mentally and physically strong as men. There are many reasons. Some feel as though they were destined to join the army, but most importantly, many people think that women can’t deal with the army physically and mentally. Woman can build up their strength just like men. Yes, out in the field there may be that lack of physical hygiene, but there is a thing called baby wipes! Also, some woman are just as mentally strong as men! I mean, some woman can keep everything to the back of their minds and not let it bother them, or they could have a cry about it, then that’s it. And this rubbish about how men feel the need to protect a female? I’m female and I would help a female or a male, if they needed it. In the army it’s about working as a team, which means helping and each having one another’s back. Yes, they are just as good as men. I think it’s acceptable, so yes. Because we’re all humans, and we have to be able to have the same rights. So if men can be in the military, so can women. Woman can be just as strong as men. We all have the power to protect our country, and I think we need the extra power just as much. Not that the military is already strong, but it wouldn’t be bad to have some more power over the fighting places. Women and men are both humans. If men are to be in the military, women should as well. Women and men are humans. We shouldn’t be asking â€Å"Should women be in the military? â€Å", instead, we should ask â€Å"Should humans be in the military? â€Å", but as we don’t ask that and we don’t consider stopping wars, I think that women and men have the same rights and obligations. How is this even a debate?!? Right, first off I just want to say that the solution to high sexual harassment levels in the military should not be to ban women from being in the army. IT’S LIKE SAYING THAT THE WAY TO STOP CHILDREN FROM BEING MOLESTED BY PAEDOPHILES IS TO BAN HAVING CHILDREN. The women are not the problem here, it is the people sexually harassing them that need to be dealt with. The women know exactly what they are enlisting for when they join the army (and actually if they don’t then the government and army are the ones to blame rather than the women themselves) and they have the right to choose what they want to do with their lives and careers. The changing landscape of modern warfare has changed and so should our requirements to enlist. Technological advancements in military capabilities have made obsolete the requirement for physical strength in the army, thereby allowing women to serve alongside men in the army. Conventional wisdom states that women should not serve National Service as physical strength is a requirement and women, in general, do not possess the strength to carry out the strenuous activities in NS. However, modern warfare is not all about physical strength. In recent years, the landscape of warfare has shifted from physical geographies to cyberspace. Whilst fighting on the front line still carries significance, cyber warfare has grown in importance. This is of particular relevance in Singapore where human population is a limit for army size and technological advantage must be fully harnessed. Take for example the Russian invasion of Georgia in 2008 where the Russian military infiltrated Georgian security networks to destabilize their military capabilities in order to win the war. This serves as evidence that physical combat is no longer the only aspect in warfare that matters. In many modern wars, cyber weapons win the battle. With this in consideration, physical strength need not be a prerequisite in National Service, women with sufficient knowledge of cyber warfare can be a significant resource for the Singaporean army as well. ome women can pull it off While I was enlisted I saw quite a few women who just couldn’t hack it. They didn’t have enough strength or mental discipline. Sometimes they just went through their â€Å"I can do what I man can do† phase, then switched over to girly (helpless) mode once they got bored. It was crap. However, some women were a pleasure to work with. I didn’t mind working with them at all, in fact I preferred it. It was a nice change in conversation and made everything a little more relaxing. I had faith in those women and in no way valued them more or less than any male I served with. We need to get those girly girls out of tough positions though. If you aren’t giving as much as your male counterpart, get something easier. There are a ton of positions in the military where strength isn’t required and the stress is a lot lower. Don’t Tell me what I can’t do! Hey you guys. I am a 5’8, 130lb, 22 year old girl, and I can currently exceed the military strength and running requirements for male combat units. I have no intention of joining the military, and I am in no way claiming that I know what it takes to make it on the front lines. But I also know that if it was something I wanted to do, my strength wouldn’t be an issue. I’m sick hearing men claim women can’t cut it. It’s very insulting to be so underestimated. Nothing infuriates me more than someone telling me I can’t do something that I already know I can do. If there are tests in place to ensure only qualified candidates get the job, and a woman passes that test. That woman is qualified for the job, just like all the men. This does not lower standards of these groups. It simply broadens the applicant pool. People used to claim women weren’t cutout for the stresses of being a doctor. People also used to say that women in executive positions were disruptive to the male work place dynamic†¦. (sound familiar? ) Women managed to do just fine in those fields despite the initial skepticism. (note statistic on 47% of 2011 medical students being women) This is just America’s next step in forming a more equal society. The military has risen above discrimination based on skin color, sexual orientation, and now gender. I can’t wait until some of you in the â€Å"no† columns explain your point of view to the next generations. They’re going to look at you the same way as I look at my grandpa when he tells me something racist. Luckily for me, I won’t have to go storming to the nearest recruitment center to prove my point. There are already plenty of awesome women in the military who are going to do it for me. Have fun ladies! Definitely yes Although it’s true that women lack the upper body strength that men have, that doesn’t mean they are incapable of performing military duty. I’ve seen women with strength that surpasses many a man’s. As for the ‘being a liability’ and needing protection, that’s all nonsense. Combat is dangerous for men and women alike, and being a man won’t save you from a bullet. If women have equal rights as men, then why limit their options? I know that when the time comes, I’m not gonna wait around, pretend to be a damsel in distress and wait for Prince Charming. Women can take care of themselves. Also, there is a reason why there are two genders – so they would complement each other. There some things that men can’t do, but women excel at and vice versa. Women in the military Brigadier Nicky Moffat was Britains first general and this year 14. 5 percent of all active duty in the military and women have worked to hard to keep this country safe and till this day because of women we can live a safe life at home and women have worked in the military since 1900-2012 and 14000 women in the navy and 60000 Army women were in the war against the Japanese. Yes they should be! 100% Men and Women both have to go through some type of basic training no matter what branch they are in. while in Basic training the military train these men and women in how to help team members in a time they may need them. I read the no opinions and a lot said no because women â€Å"aren’t strong enough† or because â€Å"they have other duties†. that to me is bull! my sister has been in the military for 5 years and she has passed every P. T. test that they have giving her. and most of the time she testes out over the expectation for the females because she pushes herself till she cant any more. Women can shoot just as good as men, we may look small but a lot young guys in the military look small as well but give them a strength test they will prove you wrong just like the women. they are in the military they know what to do, how to do it and when to do it! If women can handle childbirth, then they can also handle combat. Women that may be small can also do things that men can not do because the men are to big. people need to cut they women a break and just accept the fact that time changes and this is now 2012 were women have more rights are expected to hold there own and help our in the world. this is not the early 1900’s anymore where they are expected to stay home and clean. Women stand up for our freedom along side men, they risk loosing friends over seas and they risk their lives for you everyday! o all you who think they are to weak or should stay home and clean house can sit here are voice your opinion. Yes They should!!! I think they should be able to because for 1 htey could really help us in the fight against pretty much any one we come against in the near future. Like others said they are more slim and nopt so bold like us men are so if we say open a spot for them to fit throught to infiltrate and open doors for us me n in the enemies base then thats great, that helps us when the fight even faster rite? We are not going to be pulling a G. I. Jane Women are not going to pull a GI Jane. Most of the work in the military goes on behind the scenes where most women work. Women cannot fight in the front lines like how the movies show it. Women usually are the ones that plan how things happen and the men are the ones who carry out the plans. 14. 6% of the military is made up of women and no where do you see news of women running through a battle field shooting at all the Iraqis. Sure, women can fight, but they are not the ones that take the AK-47 and pull a Captain America. Many people think that women are ‘too weak’ to be in the military but let me open your eyes a bit. Men are built differently than women, so if we do change the requirements, they are built for the men and women. It we put in numbers, and I said, ‘if you are 200 pounds, you have to do 20 push ups. If you are 100 pounds you have to do 10. ‘ It is still the same 10%. Women can take care of themselves. This isn’t the eighteen hundreds ay more. Women have jobs and the military is one of them. Again, I must stress, we are not going into the front lines and shooting everyone with an AK-47. We can fight, but not in front lines. We are behind the scenes. it’s not the nineteenth centry anymore. Contrary to popular opinion sometimes women are capable to do the same thing man can do. If women can handle childbirth, then they can also handle combat. Since women are built smaller and more flexible they can not only do the same thing men do but they can also do some things men wouldn’t be able to do because they are too big. We are not in the nineteenth century anymore; women aren’t the only person in the house to take care of house hold duties and children. Women have been able to choose they’re life path for many years now and why not be able to choose the military if they can handle it. If they can pass the same test and make it through the same training as men then why not? The answer to this question is obvious and nonnegotiable. Women are physically capable of doing any job required by the military. Although some may say they are weaker than men, they have other strengths and abilities. The idea of rape by a fellow soldier is horrifying and simply should not happen. However, women cannot let this idea threaten them from joining the US military. Anyone with a rational perspetive can see that women must be allowed in the military. It is their Constitutional rights and cannot be denied. Absolutely should be in the military. Sure, I don’t see why cannot women cannot serve in the military. In a basic nutshell men are stronger and hardier. Women are naturally faster and more flexible. They should be given roles in military based on what is best for the gender. For example Recon, Covert Ops. Anything that requires speed and finesse. Women would excel at that naturally better than men. HOWEVER, women should be given a chance at any profession in the military. Should they fail at what they attempted they should be try what I suggested above. There is no shame at all that some women cannot do some things that men can do. I am strong believer of giving everyone a chance. After all we are only human. †¦ why is this even here? A. Women are able to perform any job that men can. I personally know several women who are stronger then half the men I know. The problem with this question is that they already serve in the military and their husbands or family look after their kids (if they even have them). So what if they serve in the military? After all it is their call. Yes, if they have the physical abilities Every woman has a right to choose the career she wants and not be excluded based on her gender. While being in the military is intensive and hard work, women do deserve the right to try out. Although it may be hard to try out for woman should they want to they deserve the right to. Because a job in the military onnly needs physical capabilities, not gender requirements. I hate questions like this†¦. My answer is really split between the two choices, but the majority of it rests here (thus why I’m voicing yes). Yes, I fully believe that women should be able to perform whatever job they are wanting to perform in the military to the fullest extent of their capabilities, with one exception: they should not be allowed to perform combat roles such as front-line troopers. The reasoning behind that is that a) the average female is a lot less physically adept than the average male, making the average female a liability to her squad. Sure, the military can train them up to be strong, but they also train the men in equal respects, if not harder. Thus, they would still be a liability and a piece of dead-weight. Secondly, the existence of the women in the patrol would signal a â€Å"guardian-angel† emotion in the male members of her patrol, especially if she was under heavy fire or pinned down, that could potentially cause them to compromise her squadmates’ lives in their attempt to save hers. Those are unacceptable risks, and thus women should not be allowed on the front lines. Any other job, though, would be acceptable and high encouraged. Yes. They can if they want to. They shouldn’t be drafted though. I believe the military benefits from the unique talents and abilities of women. Women deserve to be able to serve their country, just as much as men are. Women are just as capable of the type of split-second decisions that military jobs can require and, with occasional minor accommodations, women are just as able to perform physically as men can. Some people believe that women’s emotions would get in the way, but I also think that women have shown themselves to be just as cool under pressure as men can Yes, I agree that women should be in the military because, while they may not have the muscular strength of men, some actually do. Women have proved to be an integral part of our military. Not only in combat roles, but supporting roles as well. Everyone who chooses to protect our country should be afforded the opportunity to do so. If we had no women or minorities in the military, then our country would suffer. We need all the people we can in the roles they excel at to help our country in this time of danger. In today’s world, women should be allowed to have any profession they choose. I believe many women are as well-suited to military life as men are. With the advent of vehicles and long-range weapons, the need for hand-to-hand combat is almost nonexistent, meaning the argument that women are weaker means nothing. It doesn’t take a lot of muscle mass to pull a trigger, so guns are the great equalizer. Also, since many women are far more independent now than in the past, they should be free to choose whatever career path they desire. Yes, the country should continue to recognize equal rights for both sexes and allow women in the military. This country should follow a principle of equal rights for both sexes. Women who are capable of meeting the standards should be allowed to join the military and should be allowed into combat positions they are currently restricted from. There is no reason to prohibit this except for outmoded sexist ideas about women’s weakness, helplessness, or need to be protected. Yes, women should be in the military because they have more of a pain resistance then most men. Because of the manual labors and pain women are put through during child birth, womens bodies have become much more resistant to pain so they can become more ready for the tasks ahead. Yes, women should be in the military because there is more than enough jobs for them. There may be some jobs in the military that would be made difficult or impossible with a woman in the group. But there are still more than enough jobs left that a women can do. I do not believe that a woman can do anything a man can do in this day and age. But there remains too much social stigma against women, and there are things they can do as good or better than men. Instead of focusing on the jobs women are not allowed to do in the military, there should be more focus into the areas that they already excel in. Yes, women should be allowed in the military, because a lot of women are far tougher than some men. Women should be allowed in the military, because quite honestly, I’ve met women that are far tougher than men. If they want to do the job, then they should be allowed to do it. Women are just as capable of doing a job Yes, long-standing law, known female capacities, and this country’s commitment to fairness, all require and demand it. The military has been expanding the range of jobs it lets women perform for years. Congress hasn’t forced it to do this. Instead, experience has shown that qualified women are needed to perform all sorts of work. Even direct combat roles have, out of necessity, been taken on by women in the heat of battle, and they have performed with distinction: at least two won the Silver Star in the last decade. Or one could ignore experience, and consider justice, reason, and the rule of law. Discrimination against women in the armed forces rests on stereotypes, rather than individualized judgments, which invites the spread of such bias across the economy and public life. And this sort of prohibition violates the law. We could certainly change laws requiring equality, even the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of due process of law. But changing laws to restrict the freedom of one class sets a dangerous, ugly precedent. as a man is, if not more so, in some cases. Women should be allowed to be in the military as they should be afforded equality in all arenas of society. I believe that gender equality, even in the military, is crucial for the well-being of our society. Women should be given the same opportunities to serve our country in the military as men have. Women who want to serve their country should be allowed. We are at war now we need as many volunteers as possible. We have many strong women serving there country honorably now. I support the that women may join the military, they should enjoy equal rights. I believe that women should be allowed to join the military forces. But only in a non-combatant role. Fighting in the front-line is no the job or suitable place for women. There is many types of office jobs, nursing, doctoring and engineering job in the military. Women should be allowed to join these jobs as much as men are. Women are in every field, so they should also be in military. I agree that the women should be in the military. Nowadays we can see that the women are seen in every field in comparison with the men, and they have started excelling and taking over in each and every profession. So , t hey should not be discourage in the field of military because of their physical appearances. There’s a place in the military for women. I do believe that there is a place in the military for women. But, I think that we should be thoughtful and reasonable about that place. Women, especially those with children, should not be placing themselves in the line of fire everyday. I believe in saving the women and children, first. It should be taken into careful consideration before women are put in a position to face actual battle. Men have been engaged in violence and warfare forever. This is a relatively newly acquired skill for women. And, also, a women who is of childbearing age – her body might have to serve as a vessel of life for a child. So, when they are exposed to all the chemical, physical and emotional hazards of warfare it could effect a child down the road. Women should be in the military because there is no difference between what a woman can do and what a man can do Women should be in the military because there should be no distinction for who can choose to participate in the military. Instead, the question is whether or not an individual, be it a man or woman, is capable of functioning effectively in the military. So long as a woman proves that, there is no reason why she shouldn’t be in the military. If women decide they want to help fight for a country, they should be allowed just like men. Most of the time, you see many men joining the army and fighting for that desired country. The women are also recommended because they too are human beings. They have the right to decide if they want to help fight and also help in other services whilst in the military. Women have a great deal to contribute to our military. In many countries, military service is mandatory for both males and females. Are American women any less capable? Of course not! Just like men, women have their strengths which can benefit our military. And, just as men receive excellent training and benefits from military service, women should be eligible for these as well. Women today have ability and courage and should be able to serve if that’s what they want. Women should be in the military because they provide essential duties that women can provide the best. Some of the best soldiers in the American military are women. While women may not be on the front lines, and I agree with this, they provide invaluable services for our country that women provide the best. The best nurses, supply chain management, military leaders and administrators are women and without them, our military would not be as great as it is today. Women are completely capable of being in the military. Women can be an asset to the military. There is no reason why they should not be permitted to be in the military. Anyone who is willing to be an active part of the military should be permitted to do so. If a woman is willing to risk her life for her country she should be able to. There are currently many women in the United States military and they are an asset. I believe women should be allowed in the military; some women are born warriors, too. Some females, like many males, have deep patriotic tendencies. They have a â€Å"special something† for their country and the people. Many unsung heroes exist-both female and male; I want to bring attention to a few positions women occupy in the military. During the years from 1995-2004, females in the military increased from 13 to 15%. Women are increasing to higher levels in the U. S. Defense Department. Female soldiers are replacing many male soldier’s â€Å"traditional† jobs-patrolling, convoy and unit security, and military police. Women have proven their abilities as warriors and soldiers throughout centuries. If anyone has a yearning to provide safety for their country and can pass requirements, I believe they should be permitted the right to follow their dreams. Of course women should be in the military. Women have been serving in the military for years and have done much to prove that their service is just as valuable as their male counterparts. Women are just as patriotic as men and should never have the right to serve in the military taken away from them. Women who are willing to put their lives on the line for their country should be allowed to do so. Gender doesn’t preclude being effected by war, it shouldn’t preclude participating in it directly. In history, women are the often over-looked victims of war time. They are the ones who starve when trade lines collapse, who see their male relatives march off to fight, who are violated in home and body by encroaching armies. These are all ‘the horrors of war’ and they are subjected to them with out ever being a combatant. At least by allowing them to be, they are more empowered and involved in the society they are fighting for. If a woman can do the job, there’s not reason she shouldn’t be in the military. There’s no reason a woman shouldn’t be in the military. If she can do the job, then she has the right to get the job. Often women reason differently than men, which means she can sometimes come up with the solution to a problem that a man wouldn’t think of. Yes, women should be in the military if that is the choice they make for themselves. Women should be allowed to be in the military if that is the path they have chosen for themselves. Women are stronger than some may think, in terms of physical strength as well as mentally and emotionally. Some women want the educational opportunities, while others are patriotic or feel it’s a strong career choice. We should be allowed the same decision on this as men. Women should be in the military, because not allowing them to do so would be sexism. Not allowing women to join the military just because they’re women would be blatant sexism and it might hold back some very good soldiers from joining our ranks. However, women should be held to every physical standard that men are when joining the military. If you line up a bunch of random women and a bunch of random men and test them all on their physical athleticism, the men are on average going to perform better. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t women out there who surpass most men in athleticism. Ultimately, women should be allowed to join the military but should be given no special treatment (i. e. no â€Å"affirmative action† type allowance) regarding admissions. There definitely is a place for women in the military, but with some exceptions. Women have certain talents and personalities that are very helpful in the military. They can be very meticulous, focused, and compassionate. There are certain areas of the military that I don’t feel are appropriate for women, especially on the front lines carrying weapons. No doubt women in the military can be a distraction and temptation for the men, but that is no reason for keeping them from joining. They are a distraction and temptation wherever men and women are together. Posted by: BMaritza She can fly a plane, fix the drain, and guide the UAV. Why not serve her nation? Women can fly airplanes, provide logistical support, and serve in medical units in equal competency to men. Women can even control unmanned aerial vehicles, an upcoming military technology. Women can serve in many capacities as well as men, as they currently do. The only serious concern is in combat conditions on the front, where women lack the physical stamina of men and the risk of both rape and capture by the enemy. There is also the strong argument of unit cohesion by not having men and women serving in the same barracks and in close quarters. That is resolved by having separate men’s’ and women’s’ barracks and never having women in direct line of fire and sharing a fox hole with a man. With those conditions, women should serve. It would decrease the need to pull men into the military and provide more men for hard front-line service, if it is necessary, without having to pull more men in general from the population as a whole. Women should be in the military. Some time ago there was an outcry from women to be equal with men. Women wanted to be treated as equals, paid as equals and respected as equals. So in my opinion there should be no difference between a male soldier and a female soldier. If women sign up for the military they should be and should expect to be treated as a soldier! Granted there are different issues that a female soldier might face that a male soldier might not, especially if captured. However, the draft has not been in effect for quite a while and never has included women. So it is my opinion that if women decide they want to fight for their country they should be treated just as those who fought for equality. Let them. es Of course they should be, in every role that is there. If they can pull the requirements for a curtain role and they understand all consequences, then so be it. They deserve the right to serve and feel equal. How to cite Women Should Be in the Maliltary, Essay examples

Market analysis of J Sainsbury free essay sample

Sainsburys was founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury in London and quickly become the UK’s largest grocery retailer. Today, Sainsbury has opened over 1,1061 supermarkets and convenience stores and still develop itself continually. However, with the increasing competition of retail industry, some competitors have gradually overtaken Sainsbury, and make it become the third largest supermarket in the UK, behind Tesco and Asda. Even though it has overtaken Asda again and in the second place, it still faces challenges because of stiff competition among retail industry market. Therefore, the accurate recognition of market is necessary and Sainsbury should take activities to optimize its marketing planning. This report provides a market analysis of Sainsbury, aims to show Sainsbury’s current market conditions and give some recommendations for its future development. Analysis of Sainsbury’s external environment Organization’s external environment is the sum of various factors, which have an impact on the survival and development of organization (Hooley, G. 2012). Various changes of external environment are likely to bring different effects on organization: one is opportunity for organization’s development and the other one is threat for organization’s survival. Generally, external environment can be divided into the macro-environment (general environment) and the micro-environment (industry environment). This section will analyze Sainsbury’s general environment in UK by using PEST model and its industry environment by using Five Force Analysis, respectively. Macro-environment analysis (PEST analysis) Macro-environment factors include four main parts: political/legal, economic, social-cultural and technological; these are so-called PEST Factors. Political factors Some people think that the relationship between business and politics is not much. Although political impact on business is not very frequent, once influential, it will play a decisive role. First, for a long time, Britain has a high level of national stability. Government maintains a good partnership with local self-governments and citizens. The domestic environment is stable and harmonious and it is the premise for Sainsbury to attract more investment and also a premise of its smooth operation. Second, the economic system in UK is the mixed economies. It is the combination of market forces and central planning, it ensures the pursuit of self –interest, which is the heart of free market economics, and state intervention is always act as a supplement and adjustment for market. Therefore, mixed economies have positive impact on firm’s long-term development. Moreover, tax policy is also significant for Sainsbury. According to the data from Britain’s government, for the companies, which their profits are above ? 300,000, the corporate tax rates are declined from 26% in 2011 to 23% in 2013. 2 This policy change is helpful for Sainsbury to attract more investment. Furthermore, British government has good subsidy policy and has a good relationship with other major power. These factors can be more or less helpful for the development of Sainsbury. Economic factors Economic situation of a country will affect the income levels of consumers, consumer preferences and their savings status; then affect the market size of enterprises. According to IMF, Britain’s GDP is 2291. 431 billions in 2011, 2336. 295 billions in 2012 and 2391. 042 billions in 2013. 3 This growth trend indicates that peoples living standard improves continually and it is good for Sainsbury to scale up; also, it will improve the people’s demands for the products. Moreover, the UK’s inflation rate fell to 2% in December 2013, down from 2. 1%. 4 According to ONS, this decline mainly due to the slow increase of food’s and non-alcoholic drinks’ prices. Therefore, there are indeed some links between inflation and Sainsbury. Furthermore, according to BBC news, UK interests rate are 0.5% at January 2014, unchanged since March 2009. 5 It is still lower interests rate and good for Sainsbury to reply its loans. In addition, the continued high unemployment (around 7. 4%6) would affect the income level of customers and then affect the market activities of Sainsbury. Social-cultural factors First, education level of people is an important factor that would have impact on Sainsbury. Education is an important factor that affect people’s work, purchasing power, values, etc. In the UK 75% of adults aged 25-64 have earned a high-school degree or equivalent, it is more than the OECD average of 74%. Britain also has the free early education and further education courses and funding. Therefore, an environment with higher level of overall education will impact Sainsbury in the aspects of selecting products and service. Second, consumer’s demand and buying behavior are deeply affected by their concept of values. For different values, marketers of Sainsbury should adept different strategies to Cater to customer’s psychology. Moreover, agricultural resources are also significant factors that affect Sainsbury’s market activities. As Sainsbury is a retail company, for scarce agricultural resources they need to consider the issue of imports. Technological factors The development of science and technology brings both opportunities and challenges to organizations. First, computer interaction technologies provided Sainsbury the self-scanning system, which is cost saving and customer-friendly; and help Sainsbury built its online store, which can increase sale channels and improve customers’ experience. Moreover, information technology helps Sainsbury to manage stocks and logistics. Furthermore, eco-Technology provides more opportunities to Sainsbury to conduct energy and environmental management. It has already conducted the reduction of carbon and energy, and it wants to continue technological innovation, focusing on recycling and water innovation. 8 Micro-environment analysis (Porter’s Five Force Analysis) Porter’s Five Force Analysis is a widely used model for analyzing organization’s industry environment. It helps marketers to identify the competitive situation of an industry and then develop effective marketing strategies for organizations. The five forces determine five kinds of competing sources: bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of new entrants, threat of substitute products and competitive rivalry; as chart 2 shows below: Chart Before using the Five Force Model to analyze competition, it is necessary to research the situation of the whole industry. According to Industry Life Cycle, the retail industry, which Sainsbury is belonged, is in maturity stage, and it is still keep developing. According to ONS, UK retail sales experienced strong growth; it jumped by 2. 6 percent during December 2013. Bargaining Power of Suppliers According to Sainsbury’s Annual Report 2013, fresh food is at the heart of what they do. Also, suppliers are product sources of retail enterprise. Therefore, suitable suppliers are important assurances for products’ quality of Sainsbury. Moreover, it seems that most suppliers’ products for retails companies are not unique, this may not good for improving the bargaining power of suppliers, but as the increasing number of retail companies, suppliers have many buyers, not just Sainsbury; from this point, suppliers also can maintain their high bargaining power. However, Sainsbury has built a close and long-standing relationship with its suppliers. It corporates with its suppliers, establishing â€Å"Development Group† for farmers and growers, investing groups and supporting farmers. 10 This relationship makes Sainsbury and its supplier interdependence, and also makes suppliers lose some bargaining power. Bargaining power of buyers Generally, buyers of retail industry are not concentrated and most buyers just buy a small number of products, it seems that buyers of retail industry have less bargaining power. However, because of the increasing number of retail companies, customers have more and more opportunities to choice. Moreover, the cost of switching from one seller’s product to another seller’s product is low, even zero. Therefore, the buyers bargaining power is also growing. Threat of new entrants Retail industry can realize the face-to-face contract with customers, and its profits are also high. Therefore, many strength companies intend to join the retail market. For example, some large clothes companies opened their own stores; moreover, many companies will expand their product line to become  hypermarkets. They are all potential competitors of Sainsbury. Threat of substitute products The main substitutes of supermarket are hypermarkets, specialty stores and online stores. Especially online stores, because of their significant cost advantage and convenience, the threats from online retail stores are big. Competitive rivalry Obviously, the competition of retail companies is very fierce. The number of retail companies increases continuously. In the domestic context, like Tesco, ASDA, Waitrose, MS, etc. are all strong competitors of Sainsbury. Opportunities and threats analysis Opportunities: 1. Expanding foreign markets, like China, India. 2. Enriching the mode of operation, not just large-scale supermarket; some other location and mode could be adopted, like Sainsbury Local. 3. Acquisition, merger or strategic alliances with other global retailers. Threats: 1. Competition from strong rivals. 2. Political problems when expanding foreign markets. 3. Prospects for local retail industry, cooperation or competition. Market segmentation, targeting and positioning Market segmentation of grocery retail market Market segmentation is dividing the mass market into some groups; customers in one certain group have common characteristics. Customers’ demands are dissimilar, and companies also have their own strengths in different areas, therefore, market segmentation can be smoothly realized and plays an important role in companies’ production and marketing. Each market segment is more specific, it is easier for marketers to grasp customers’ needs, and then develop appropriate marketing strategies. There are many methods used to conduct market segmentation. Generally, it can be conducted through four methods: demographic, geographic, psychographic, and benefits. Demographic The method of demographic includes several factors: age, family size, nationality, religion, occupation and income. Age and occupation will be analyzed in details here. Retail market can be divided through age. People in different age have different habits and customs; it would contribute to their different needs for grocery. For example, most young people live a fast-paced life, in order to saving time, they are more likely to choice some convenience food or semi-finished food; while most old people enjoy a slower pace of life, so that they tend to choice fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers and cook meal at home. Moreover, in some extent, people’s occupation decides their social class and income. People with high income tend to focus on the quality of product; they prefer to spend more money to buy a better product. While people with low income tend to pay more attention on the cost-performance of products. They are willing to spend more time to select the best suitable products. Therefore, these two markets have been divided. Geographic This method includes several factors: country, region, city, climate, etc. The population density in various regions is different. Generally, city’s population density is higher than that of countryside; therefore, they also have different demands for grocery. Moreover, climate also can be a factor that used in market segmentation. For instance, Malaysia do not has winter, so that apparel products for Malaysian market are different from others. Marketers tend to increase the number of light clothes and decrease the number of thick clothes. Psychographic This method mainly includes personality, lifestyle, values and attitudes. In terms of personality, some people are adventurous and some are traditional. Groceries for the â€Å"adventurers† are usually full of new ideas and constantly changing, while groceries for â€Å"conservatives† have less change but have higher and stable quality. Moreover, lifestyle also will affect people’s choice of groceries. People in a fast-paced life tend to choose convenience food, while people in a slow paced life tend to choose fresh food ingredients. These two groups are different market segments. Benefits Benefits factor means different people have various purposes when buying a certain type of products. So, each certain benefit can form a market segment. For example, when people choose soft drinks, some people are pursuing a good taste; some people who are overweight mainly pay attention to the calorie content; some people want to use these soft drinks to entertain guests, so that they are focus on the exterior designs; some people just want to quench, they tend to focus on the cost performance of soft drinks. Therefore, in retail market, there are specialized products for different â€Å"beneficiaries†; they have formed different market segmentation. Sainsbury’s market targeting Hooley, G.  says: â€Å" One of the key decisions a company faces is its choice of market or markets to serve†. Market targeting is the process that organizations select preferable market segments from a range of market segments, in order to prepare suitable products and services to meets the market segments’ needs. Here is a model that suited to deciding which market should be targeted in the first place. 11As chart 3 shows below: Chart From this model, in order to decide the target markets, organizations should understand their strengths and the attractive markets. These two factors are just the criterion for selecting target market. As a grocery retail company, Sainsbury is for the general public. Generally, its target market is undifferentiated market. It just the so said â€Å"full market coverage†. But it also has the special market segment. Sainsbury are targeting middle and high-class people and people who have health conscious. â€Å"Fresh food is at the heart of what they do†. 12 Sainsbury is committing to food quality for a long time. It invested in farmer development and built agricultural base in order to ensure the high-quality food supply. Therefore the prices of these foods are relatively higher compared with other competitors, like ASDA, Audi. According to the retail industry’s market segmentation, Sainsbury’s strength of high-quality food will attract relatively middle and high-class people, who are pay more attention on healthful life style and less attention to money. In fact, this market is an attractive market. The market size is not small, and the most important factor is that this market has high growth rate. With the improvement of peoples living standards, more and more people attach importance to food health and safety. Various green food and organic food are emerging, the attention concerning on food quality will become increasingly common. Therefore, these markets are good choices for Sainsbury to become target markets. However, its worth noting that attractive market segments have more competitors. For example, for high-class people market, there is high-end Waitrose; for health food market, MS also powerful; for fast-paced life market, almost every retail company is trying to open express store and online store. Therefore, Sainsbury should develop more unique and new markets, or try to be the best in its existing markets. Sainsbury’s market positioning As there are still intense competitions in target market segments, it is necessary for Sainsbury to create a competitive advantage in that chosen market. It is so called â€Å"market positioning†. The created advantage should be unique, hard for competitors to imitate and provide value for customers (Hooley, G. 2012). The natural of market positioning is to make obvious difference between the company and its competitors. That is to say, marketers can use the â€Å"uniqueness driver† to let customers feel the unique characteristics of this company, then leave a deep impression to the potential consumers. Generally, uniqueness driver can be summarized in five points: Sainsbury’s competitive advantages mainly focus on product differentiation, price differentiation and brand differentiation. Product differentiation According to market research, Tesco is focus on the abundant and diversity of products; ALDI’s and ASDA’s advantage is their lower prices. In terms of Sainsbury, its products’ characteristics mainly focus on their high quality. According to its Annual Report 2013, managers said that the quality and value of their food, their strong ethical standards and supplier relationships, differentiate Sainsbury from other supermarket. Sainsbury has regarded its high quality food as its strength. In fact, not only food, the other groceries of Sainsbury also have high quality, especially its own-brand products, which is always a driver of its growth and customers’ loyalty. Even though its do not have price advantage, this product advantage is enough to attract target people and let them feel Sainsbury’s whole strength. Price differentiation In fact, price is not an obvious competitive advantage for Sainsbury. Even so, it still has price differentiation. The average price of Sainsbury’s products is higher than Tesco, Aldi, or Morrison, and its discount frequency and intensity are also less than others. But its products’ price does not higher than Waitrose. Sainsbury stresses on price ratio, managers try to build a supermarket where customer use money as little as possible to buy groceries as well as possible. It just their slogan: â€Å"Live well for less†. Brand differentiation For a long time, Sainsbury is focusing on building a socially responsible brand image. Sainsbury’s employees have their corporate values: respect for environment, making a positive difference to community and a great place to work. 13 They did especially good in the aspect of protecting environment in 2013. They put waste into positive use, removing package from own-brand products, investing renewable energy, etc. Sainsbury’s environmental awareness, combining with its high quality products and strong ethic standard, is conductive to build a corporate which is full of social responsibility and deserve to trust. Therefore, its target customers would recognize it, trust it, and be loyal to it. In summary, Sainsbury has a successful market positioning. In people’s mind, Sainsbury is a trustworthy and customer-friendly grocery retail company with high quality products, reasonable price and enough social responsibilities. However, there is some potential problem in its products positioning. Its products are good enough, but the advantage is not unique. Waitrose and MS already entered the high ground, and other supermarket can develop their product and also have high quality products. This advantage is not hard to imitate. That is to say, this advantage is not stable and it is easy to lose. A positive example is Tesco. From my research, Tesco is the only large supermarket chains, which has Chinese food area. It is unique. This just matches Tesco’s product positioning, which is abundant and diversity. Even if other supermarket imitates this advantage, Tesco also maintain its â€Å"first to market† strength. Therefore, excellent goods are not enough, Sainsbury need some superior and special product in the future market competitions. Patent is the best, such as nutritive vegetables only growing in its own farmland. On the contrary, Sainsbury’s brand positioning is unique and hard to imitate. It is helpful to improve the competitiveness of Sainsbury. Marketing mix of Sainsbury In order to realize the marketing functions, company needs to have a marketing program or strategy. This is known as marketing mix (Borden, N. 1964). Marketing mix includes the following major elements: product, price, place, and promotion. These elements form the â€Å"4Ps† strategy. As chart 5 shows below: Chart Product In order to supports its product positioning, Sainsbury has continually insisted on the quality of food. Moreover, its expands product line into general merchandise and clothing, â€Å"offering customers high street quality and style at supermarket prices†,14 it also develops new business: pharmacy. As some people comment before, ASDA’s total sales had been boosted by non-food sales, Sainsbury is still particularly strong in the fresh food sector. 15 Now, Sainsbury intend to fully implements its market positioning through providing customers more and better products, better meet the needs of customers. Furthermore, it also develops bank service, entering energy industry and digital entertainment market; these activities can improve customers’ experience and develop high quality services. However, the sector of high quality food, which is the core offer of Sainsbury, cannot be neglected when develop numerous products at the same time. As long as Sainsbury does the best and is unique in this area, its competitiveness can be improved. Moreover, Sainsbury should notice the food packing in the future. In some extent, packaging can show the high quality of products. Although Sainsbury committed to environmental protection, simplifying package. But simple does not mean crude. On the contrary, Sainsbury can promote environmental awareness through packaging. Price Sainsbury does not have obvious low price advantage compared with some competitors. But it focus on price ratio. In 2013, Sainsbury’s managers have achieved over 100 million pounds of operational cost savings. They try to reduce products’ prices appropriately through reducing cost, and improving price ratio. This is an effective activity to become more attractive and to increase some price advantages. However, the reduction of price is not unlimited. Ultimately, it is still related to market positioning. High quality product cannot have low price. In some extent, raising the price for some special products appropriately can highlight Sainsbury’s market positioning and improve competitiveness. Place (Distribution) In this aspect, Sainsbury has complete channels and services, including supermarket, convenience store and online store. In 2013, it opened 14 new supermarkets and 87 convenience stores and find that 22% of UK population does not live within a 15 minutes drive of a Sainsbury. Indeed, it ensures the shopping convenience and put the customers in the first place. But many competitors also have this series of distribution methods, like Tesco and Morrison. Therefore, the uniqueness is the key. With the development of  technology, in the future, Sainsbury can develop a special method for quick paying online as a patent, which can optimize its market positioning. Promotion Advertisement is an important method for Sainsbury and other retail companies to promote their product. Beside this, from Sainsbury’s official channel in YouTube, we can see many videos that teach people how to cooking, including quick and easy recipes, beef recipes, pudding recipes, etc. Through this activity, Sainsbury can introduce their superior food; at the same time, more potential customers would be attracted. Sainsbury had cooperated with James Oliver, who is a famous chef for 11years. This cooperation is good for Sainsbury to introduce and promote their high quality food, highlight its market positioning. From 2011, Sainsbury started to cooperate with David Beckham, mainly focus on the activity of Active Kids. 16 Preventing the growth of obesity children. Obviously, this strategy is conductive to publicity brand image and can let people have more feeling about Sainsbury’s brand positioning. Conclusion In summary, because of increasingly fierce market competition and the rapid growth of competitors, Sainsbury faces new challenges. It needs develop itself continually and does some change when necessary to compete with others. It also has opportunists. First, as the second largest supermarket in the UK, Sainsbury has a lot of loyal customers. Therefore, it should still insist on it strength area: high quality food, fresh fruits and vegetables, ensure that there are no losses of existing markets. Moreover, retail market is for the public, there are still lots of untapped markets. Generating new ideas, exploring new markets, leaving core competitive market in certain degree, are also good strategy for Sainsbury to increase competitiveness.

Best Character Analysis Myrtle Wilson - The Great Gatsby

Best Character Analysis Myrtle Wilson - The Great Gatsby SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips In most books and movies, the â€Å"other woman† – the woman having an affair with a married man – is often painted as a villain. But what about in The Great Gatsby, a novel in which both married women (Myrtle Wilson and Daisy Buchanan) are having affairs? Especially given that one (Daisy) ends up killing the other (Myrtle), is Myrtle just a one-note â€Å"other woman,† or is there more to her? Myrtle’s role in the story isn’t as large as Daisy’s, Gatsby’s, or Tom’s. However, she is crucial to the plot of the story, and especially to its tragic conclusion. Find out more about Myrtle’s role in Gatsby in this guide! Article Roadmap Myrtleas a character Physical description Myrtle's history before the novel begins Actions in the novel Character Analysis Myrtle quotes Common discussion topics and essay ideas Quick Note on Our Citations Our citation format in this guide is (chapter.paragraph). We're using this system since there are many editions of Gatsby, so using page numbers would only work for students with our copy of the book. To find a quotation we cite via chapter and paragraph in your book, you can either eyeball it (Paragraph 1-50: beginning of chapter; 50-100: middle of chapter; 100-on: end of chapter), or use the search function if you're using an online or eReader version of the text. Myrtle Wilson's Physical Description Then I heard footsteps on thestairs and in a moment the thickish figure of a woman blocked out the light from the office door. She was in the middle thirties, and faintly stout, but she carried her surplus flesh sensuously as some women can. Her face, above a spotted dress of dark blue crepe-de-chine, contained no facet or gleam of beauty but there was an immediately perceptible vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smouldering. She smiled slowly and walking through her husband as if he were a ghost shook hands with Tom, looking him flush in the eye. (2.15) Unlike Nick’s description of Daisy, which focuses on her voice, mannerisms, and charm, and unlike his description of Jordan, which focuses on her posture and athleticism, Nick’s description of Myrtle focuses almost entirely on her body itself. Perhaps this fits with her role as Tom’s mistress, but it also indicates Nick sees little in Myrtle in terms of intellect or personality. This description also speaks to the strong physical attraction between Tom and Myrtle that undergirds their affair. This attraction serves as a foil to the more deep-seated emotional attraction between Gatsby and Daisy, the novel’s central affair. Myrtle Before the Novel Begins We don’t know a ton about Myrtle Wilson’s background except what we can gather from the passing comments from other characters. For example, we get the sense Myrtleloved her husband when they got married, but has since been disappointed by his lack of cash and social status, and now feels stifled by her twelve-year marriage: "I married him because I thought he was a gentleman," she said finally. "I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe." "You were crazy about him for a while," said Catherine. "Crazy about him!" cried Myrtle incredulously. "Who said I was crazy about him? I never was any more crazy about him than I was about that man there." She pointed suddenly at me, and every one looked at me accusingly. I tried to show by my expression that I had played no part in her past. "The only crazy I was was when I married him. I knew right away I made a mistake. He borrowed somebody's best suit to get married in and never even told me about it, and the man came after it one day when he was out. She looked around to see who was listening: " 'Oh, is that your suit?' I said. 'This is the first I ever heard about it.' But I gave it to him and then I lay down and cried to beat the band all afternoon." "She really ought to get away from him," resumed Catherine to me. "They've been living over that garage for eleven years. And Tom's the first sweetie she ever had." (2.2-7) She begins her affair with Tom Buchanan after he sees her on the train and later presses against her in the station: I was going up to New York to see my sister and spend the night. He had on a dress suit and patent leather shoes and I couldn't keep my eyes off him but every time he looked at me I had to pretend to be looking at the advertisement over his head. When we came into the station he was next to me and his white shirt-front pressed against my armand so I told him I'd have to call a policeman, but he knew I lied. I was so excited that when I got into a taxi with him I didn't hardly know I wasn't getting into a subway train† (2.120). Myrtledesperately wants to come off as sophisticated and wealthy despite herhumble roots. Nick finds her efforts tacky and vulgar, and he spends a lot of time commenting on her clothes, mannerisms, and conversational style. She is oblivious about upper-class life: she tells her sister at one point Tom doesn’t divorce Daisy because Daisy is Catholic. This is a small inside joke on Fitzgerald's part - since Tom and Daisy are part of the community of uber-WASPy residents of East Egg, there's almost nochance that Daisy could be Catholic. That Myrtle thinks accepts Tom's lieshows that she is not a well-schooled as she thinks she is about the life and customs of the elite class she wants to be a part of. Still, before the novel begins, Tom has gotten comfortable showing Myrtlearound in popular restaurants and doesn’t hide the affair. Perhaps this causes Myrtle to misunderstand what she means to Tom: she doesn’t seem to realize she’s just one in a string of mistresses. Summary of Myrtle's Action in the Novel The idea of Myrtle Wilson is introduced in Chapter 1, when she callsthe Buchanans’ house to speak to Tom. We get our first look at Myrtle in Chapter 2, when Nick goes with Tom to George Wilson’s garage to meet her, and then to Myrtle’s apartment in Manhattan for a party. On that day, she buys a dog, has sex with Tom (with Nick in the next room), throws a party, and is fawned on by her friends, and then ends up with a broken nose when Tom punches her after she brings up Daisy. This doesn’t prevent her from continuing the affair. Later on, in Chapter 7, George starts to suspect she’s having an affair when he finds her dog’s leash in a drawer at the house. He locks her upstairs in their house, determined to move out west once he gets the money from the car sale he’s waiting on from Tom. Myrtle glimpses Tom, along with Nick and Jordan, as they drive up to Manhattan in Gatsby’s yellow car. Myrtle and George fight later that evening, and Myrtle manages to run out of the house after yelling at George to beat her and calling him a coward. Just then, she spots the yellow car heading back for Long Island. Thinking it’s Tom, she runs toward and then out in front of the car, waving her arms. But Daisy is driving the car, and she decides to run over Myrtle rather than get into a head-on collision with an oncoming car. She hits Myrtle, who dies instantly. Myrtle’s death emotionally and mentally devastates George, which prompts him to murder Gatsby (who he mistakes for both his wife’s killer and lover), and then kill himself. The death car. Key Myrtle Wilson Quotes Mrs. Wilson had changed her costume some time before and was now attired in an elaborate afternoon dress of cream colored chiffon, which gave out a continual rustle as she swept about the room. With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change. The intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur. Her laughter, her gestures, her assertions became more violently affected moment by moment and as she expanded the room grew smaller around her until she seemed to be revolving on a noisy, creaking pivot through the smoky air. (2.56) Here, we see Myrtle transformed from her more sensuous, physical persona into that of someone desperate to come off as richer than she actually is. Wielding power over her group of friends, she seems to revel in her own image. Unlike Gatsby, who projects an elaborately rich and worldly character, Myrtle’s persona is much more simplistic and transparent. (Notably Tom, who immediately sees Gatsby as a fake, doesn’t seem to mind Myrtle’s pretensions – perhaps because they are of no consequence to him, or any kind of a threat to his lifestyle.) "Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" shouted Mrs. Wilson. "I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai" Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand. (2.125-126) Here we see Myrtle pushing her limits with Tom – and realizing that he is both violent and completely unwilling to be honest about his marriage. While both characters are willful, impulsive, and driven by their desires, Tom is violently asserting here that his needs are more important than Myrtle’s. After all, to Tom, Myrtle is just another mistress, and just as disposable as all the rest. Also, this injury foreshadows Myrtle’s death at the hands of Daisy, herself. While invoking Daisy’s name here causes Tom to hurt Myrtle, Myrtle’s actual encounter with Daisy later in the novel turns out to be deadly. "Beat me!" he heard her cry. "Throw me down and beat me, you dirty little coward!" (7.314) When George confronts his wife about her affair, Myrtle is furious and needles at her husband – already insecure since he’s been cheated on – by insinuating he’s weak and less of a man than Tom. Also, their fight centers around her body and its treatment, while Tom and Daisy fought earlier in the same chapter about their feelings. In this moment, we see that despite how dangerous and damaging Myrtle’s relationship with Tom is, she seems to be asking George to treat her in the same way that Tom has been doing. Myrtle's disturbing acceptance of her role as a just a body - a piece of meat, basically - foreshadows the gruesome physicality of her death. Michaelis and this man reached her first but when they had torn open her shirtwaist still damp with perspiration, they saw that her left breast was swinging loose like a flap and there was no need to listen for the heart beneath. The mouth was wide open and ripped at the corners as though she had choked a little in giving up the tremendous vitality she had stored so long. (7.317) Even in death, Myrtle’s physicality and vitality are emphasized. In fact, the image is pretty overtly sexual – notice how it’s Myrtle’s breast that’s torn open and swinging loose, and her mouth ripped open at the corners. This echoes Nick’s view of Myrtle as a woman and mistress, nothing more – even in death she’s objectified. This moment is also much more violent than her earlier broken nose. While that moment cemented Tom as abusive in the eyes of the reader, this one truly shows the damage that Tom and Daisy leave in their wake, and shapes the tragic tone of the rest of the novel. The graphic and bloody nature of Myrtle's death really sticks with you. Common Essay Topics/ Areas of Discussion You will most likelybe asked towrite about Myrtlein relation to other characters (especially Daisy), or in prompts that ask you to compare the â€Å"strivers† in the book (including also Gatsby, George Wilson) with the old money set (Tom, Daisy, Jordan). To learn how best to approach this kind of compare and contrast essay, read our article on common character pairings and how to analyze them. It’s less likely, but not impossible, that you will be assigned a Myrtle-specific essay. In either case, Myrtle’s most important chapters are 2 and 7, so close read those carefully. When writing about her, pay close attention to Myrtle’s interactions with other characters. And if you’re writing an essay that discusses Myrtle as someone trying to live out the American Dream, make sure to address her larger influences and motivations. We’ll take a look at some of these strategies in action below. Why Do Tom and Myrtle Get Together? What Do They See in Each Other? For readers new to Gatsby, Tom and Myrtle’s relationship can seem a bit odd. There is obvious physical chemistry, but it can be hard to see why the classist, misogynist Tom puts up with Myrtle - or why Myrtle accepts Tom's mistreatment. For Tom, the affair – just one in a string he’s had since his honeymoon – is about taking and being able to get whatever he wants. Having an affair is a show of power. Especially since he’s been taking her around popular restaurants in Manhattan (2.4), it’s clear he’s not exactly hiding the relationship – instead, he’s flaunting it. He’s so assured of his place in society as a wealthy man, that he’s free to engage in some risky and socially inappropriate behavior – because he knows no one can actually touch his wealth or social position. For Myrtle, the affair (her first) is about escape from her life with George, and a taste ofa world – Manhattan, money, nice things – she wouldn’t otherwise have access to. It’s clear from how Myrtle moves and speaks that she’s confident and self-assured, and assumes that her relationship with Tom is a permanent ticket into the world of the wealthy – not just a fleeting glimpse. The fact that Tom sees Myrtle as disposable but Myrtle hopes for more in their relationship is painfully apparent at the end of Chapter 2, when she insists on bringing up Daisy, and Tom responds by breaking Myrtle’s nose. But despite this nasty encounter, the two continue their relationship, suggesting that this kind of abuse is the norm for Tom’s affairs, and Myrtle is too eager to stay in the new world she’s found – or even believes that Tom will still leave Daisy for her – that she stays as well. By the end of the novel, Myrtle doesn't seem to have been completelymistaken about Tom's affection for her. After all, Tom says he that he â€Å"cried like a baby† (9.145) when he found dog food for the dog he's bought her in Myrtle’s apartment. Of course, since it's Tom, his grief is probablyself-pitying than selfless. Either way, their relationship is indicative of both their values: Myrtle's ambition and Tom’s callousness. What Does Myrtle’s Life (and Tragic Ending) Say About the American Dream? Myrtle, like George and Gatsby, was obviously not born into money, and instead is relying on her own wits to make it in 1920s America. In a manner quite similar to Gatsby’s, she consciously adopts a different persona to try and get access to a richer circle (while George seems to be the only one relying on honest work – his shop – and honest relationships, through his loyalty to Myrtle, to improve his lot in life). But Myrtle aims too high, and ends up killed when she mistakes Gatsby’s yellow car for Tom’s, and runs out in the road assuming the car will stop for her. In the same way that Gatsby overestimates his value to Daisy, Myrtleoverestimates her value to Tom. Even if Tom had been driving the car, and even if he had stopped for her, he would never have whisked her away from George, divorced Daisy, and married her. Furthermore, the fact she assumed the garish yellow car was Tom’s shows how little she understands the stiff, old money world Tom comes from. Myrtle’s complete misunderstanding of Tom, as well as her violent death, fit the overall cynical message in the book that the American Dream is a false promise to those born outside of the wealthy class in America. As hard as anyone tries, they don’t stand a chance of competing with those in America born into the old money class. They will never understand the strange internal rules that govern the old money set, and will never stand a chance of being their equal. How Does Myrtle's Home Reflect Her Character, Attitudes, Beliefs, and Values? This is a prompt that you can obviously use for any of the characters, but it’s especially interesting in Myrtle’s case, since she has two residences: the house above the auto shop that George owns, and the apartment that Tom Buchanan rents for her in the city. Myrtle'shome with George is a dark, hopelessimage of working class life in America: it's an apartment above a baregarage, nestled in the dreadful Valley of Ashes. George is utterly mired in this home, even coated with a thin layer of ash from the factories outside. In contrast, Myrtle is vivacious and free of the ash, which gives her a layer of separation from her actual home. Myrtle’s apartment with Tom is overstuffed and gaudy, and she seems much happier and more at home there. The mix of high-brow pretension in the decor with her low-brow entertainment speaks to how Myrtle values the appearance of wealth and sophistication, but doesn’t actually understand what upper-class taste looks like the way Tom and Daisy Buchanan do. So while the Wilson’s garage is a testament to the struggle of the working class in American in the 1920s, Myrtle and Tom’s apartment is a physical representation of the airs Myrtle puts on and the appearances of wealth she values. Myrtle's taste in decor overlaps quite a bit with King Louis XIV's. Why Exactly Does Myrtle Run Into the Road? One of the novel’s most important events is also one that can be confusing for students: namely, Myrtle’s death at the end ofChapter 7. How exactly does she end up in the road? What does it have to do with her strange encounter with Tom, Nick, and Jordan in the garage earlier in the day? The incident is confusing because we come at it from many narrative angles: Setup from Nick's point of view Michaelis’s inquest testimony about the accident Nick'sdescription of the accident sceneright after Myrtle's death Gatsby's explanation of the accident to Nick after the fact Additional information from Michaelis in Chapter 8 about George’s actions both before and after Myrtle’s death A final revelatory confession from Tom about his role in George's violence in Chapter 9 Piecing together these three takes on the incident, this is what happens, in order: Before the accident, George has begun to suspect Myrtle's affair. George locks Myrtle up above the garage, saying "She’s going to stay there till the day after to-morrow, and then we’re going to move away† (7.3). Michaelis, uncomfortable, finds an excuse to leave. Tom, Jordan, and Nick driveup to the gas station in the yellow car. Tom brags that the car is his. Myrtle looks downstairs and concludes two things: first, that Jordan is Tom’s wife, and second, that Tom owns the yellow car. Later that evening, Myrtle fights with George about being locked up. We don’t see much of this fight. All we know is that she cries â€Å"throw me down and beat me!† (7.314) to George. Meanwhile, Gatsby and Daisy are driving back from Manhattan to East Egg after the Plaza Hotel showdown. Myrtle runs outside. Outside, Myrtle sees the yellow car and assumes it’s Tom on his way back to Long Island. Myrtle runs out to the car, waving her arms, likely because she thinks Tom will stop for her and rescue her from George. At the same time, another car is driving in the opposite direction towards Manhattan. When Daisy sees Myrtle in the road, she has to make a quick decision: either run over Myrtle, or swerve into the oncoming car to avoid Myrtle. Daisy first drives toward the oncoming car, but at the last second, turns back into her own lane and hits and kills Myrtle instead. What’s Next? Still a bit confused about the climax of the novel? Battle of Montgisard during the Crusades

Battle of Montgisard during the Crusades The Battle of Montgisard took place November 25, 1177, and was part of the Ayyubid-Crusader War (1177-1187) which was fought between the Second and Third Crusades. Background In 1177, the Kingdom of Jerusalem faced two major crises, one from within and one from without. Internally, the issue involved who would succeed sixteen year-old King Baldwin IV, who, as a leper, would not produce any heirs. The most likely candidate was the child of his pregnant, widowed sister Sibylla. While the nobles of the kingdom sought a new husband for Sibylla, the situation was complicated by the arrival of Philip of Alsace who demanded that she be married to one of his vassals. Evading Philips request, Baldwin sought to form an alliance with the Byzantine Empire with the goal of striking at Egypt. While Baldwin and Philip schemed over Egypt, the leader of the Ayyubids, Saladin, began preparing to attack Jerusalem from his base in Egypt. Moving with 27,000 men, Saladin marched into Palestine. Though he lacked Saladins numbers, Baldwin mobilized his forces with the goal of mounting a defense at Ascalon. As he was young and weakened by his disease, Baldwin gave effective command of his forces to Raynald of Chatillon. Marching with 375 knights, 80 Templars under Odo de St Amand, and several thousand infantry, Baldwin arrived at the town and was quickly blockaded by a detachment of Saladins army. Baldwin Triumphant Confident that Baldwin, with his smaller force, would not attempt to interfere, Saladin moved slowly and looted the villages of Ramla, Lydda and Arsuf. In doing so, he allowed his army to become dispersed over a large area. At Ascalon, Baldwin and Raynald managed to escape by moving along the coast and marched on Saladin with the goal of intercepting him before he reached Jerusalem. On November 25, they encountered Saladin at Montgisard, near Ramla. Caught by total surprise, Saladin raced to reconcentrate his army for battle. Anchoring his line on a nearby hill, Saladins options were limited as his cavalry was spent by the march from Egypt and subsequent looting. As his army looked upon Saladins, Baldwin summoned the Bishop of Bethlehem to ride forward and raise aloft a piece of the True Cross. Prostrating himself before the sacred relic, Baldwin asked God for success. Forming for battle, Baldwin and Raynalds men charged the center of the Saladins line. Breaking through, they put the Ayyubids to rout, driving them from the field. The victory was so complete that the Crusaders succeeded in capturing Saladins entire baggage train. Aftermath While exact casualties for the Battle of Montgisard are not known, reports indicate that only ten percent of Saladins army returned safely to Egypt. Among the dead was the son of Saladins nephew, Taqi ad-Din. Saladin only escaped the slaughter by riding a racing camel to safety. For the Crusaders, approximately 1,100 were killed and 750 wounded. While Montgisard proved a dramatic victory for the Crusaders, it was the last of their successes. Over the next ten years, Saladin would renew his efforts to take Jerusalem, finally succeeding in 1187. Entrepreneurship And Small Business Development Essay

Entrepreneurship And Small Business Development - Essay Example Entrepreneurship is also about making proper plans and arranging the resources required for converting the market opportunities into reality (Dyck and Neubert, 2008, p.173). While on the other hand, an entrepreneur is an individual who is focused on the decision of allocation and harmonization of scarce resources (Casson, 2003, p.19). Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg, Sam Walton, Gordon Moore, Ted Turner and Alan Sugar are among the eminent entrepreneurs of the world (Finance in the classroom, n.d.). However, in the context of this project Alan Sugar, the owner of Amstrad will be chosen as the entrepreneur on whom the study will be conducted. Alan Sugar is a successful entrepreneur and tasted success at an early age. The leadership skills of Alan Sugar are also noticeable. Hence considering all the relevant facts Alan Sugar is the ideal person. The study will focus on the attributes associated with an entrepreneur and also the theories related to it. The report will also highlight the re lation between the entrepreneurs and the theories applied. The report will then try to give an insight about the entrepreneur by considering the literature and the practical work. Finally, after analyzing the finding from the study, a conclusion will be drawn which will portray whether the null hypothesis holds true or it is rejected. An overview of the theory of leadership as applied to entrepreneurs Entrepreneurship has always been a subject of study that has been highly researched and theorized and is still in the developmental stage. Earlier studies have proposed that entrepreneurs are more inclined to unique psychological needs and are also more spontaneous, motivated to achieve their goals, takes more challenges and are also prone to take more risks. Hence an entrepreneur has to adapt according to the demand of the situation. The most important functions of an entrepreneur are as follows:- 1. Organization building: - An entrepreneur needs to organize all the relevant elements such as manpower, material and the related resources. The entrepreneur has to perform the function of planning, organization, and monitoring. The entrepreneur also needs to use the leadership skills to build a team, accumulate resources and finally solve the problems. According to Kilby, entrepreneurship is an important activity in developing countries and encompasses the following rule. Purchasing inputs. Managing finance. Managing production. Attaining charge over the limited resource. 2. Bearing Uncertainty and Risk: - According to the author Andrew F. Newman, an entrepreneur has to bear huge risk and uncertainty (Newman, 2007, p.1-2). Every decision related to the creation of a new product, incorporating new technologies, and taking up foreign venture involves risk and uncertainty. Thus in this uncertain environment entrepreneurs needs to make the decision by forecasting the associated risk. Since entrepreneurs are not gamblers, therefore, they take calculated risks. Entrepreneu rs also lead, create and take actions. Therefore all the mentioned behaviors produce leadership competencies. Leadership is about selecting the appropriate style according to the situation. Also, the characteristics of the person, who is being guided need to be considered (BBC, 2006). The leadership qualities are an important characteristic for an entrepreneur.

Breast cancer Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Breast cancer - Essay Example The term metastatic is used when breast malignancy spreads to additional sections of the body (National Cancer Institute, 4). When 15 -20 per cent of the tumors shows a strong presence of the HER2, the condition is referred to as HER2 positive breast cancer. When this cancer is not treated, then extremely poor prognosis which leaves fast time to lapse or progression compared to HER2 negative breast cancer. Breast cancer happens to be the most common and prevalent cancer among women in the entire world (Hoffmann, 2). About 1.5 million cases are reported every year. These are new cases, leaving a chance form other million of cases which go unreported. Men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer although in extremely rare cases. Breast cancer among men accounts for less that 1 per cent in the world. Breast cancer has got many risk factors. The majority cases of breast cancer are reported among women who are above 50 years. The cancer is known to occur is families with a history of the cancer (National Cancer Institute, 4). It is also common in the late cases of the first pregnancy and among kinsfolk with a history of benign breasts ailments and diseases. A long menstrual life, which leads to a prolonged exposure to hormones, is classified as a risk factor to this devastating disease. Furthermore, the use of hormone replacement therapy which occurs often after menopause is viewed as another way of exposing the body the hormones making it vulnerable to breast cancer (Hoffmann, 2). Lifestyle risk factors are viewed as weighty reasons, which when, checked can help control the disease. They include physical inactivity and high alcohol intake. Being obese or overweight after menopause and a high fat diet is classified as lifestyle risk factors. In order to identify these risk factors, there are many epidemiological research and studies. However, having one or several risk factors does not mean that one has the disease. These are cases where the victims of breast cancer fail to show any risk factors (National Cancer Institute, 4). In the early stages of breast cancer, there are no symptoms. However, some of the known symptoms include changes in the nipple. This can lead to unusual secretion of discharge (National Cancer Institute, 4). This can also be accompanied by rashes around the nipple area. Another symptom is the change in shape or size of the breast. The most commonly known symptom is a hard lump that develops in the armpit of breast. This lump occurs on one side of the breast or the armpit (National Cancer Institute, 4). Changes in the skin are also a common symptom. This may lead to redness, dimples and puckering. There are a number of treatments associated with breast cancer (Hoffmann, 2). They include radiotherapy, surgery, hormonal therapies and chemotherapy. The use of these therapies is not standardized. They can be used alone or combined depending on the stage of breast cancer. The surgery includes mastectomy or lumpectomy. This is the best option or treatment among the patients whose cancer has not spread to other body parts. Some of the most vulnerable parts, when the cancer begins to spread included the lungs and chest walls. Radiotherapy is therapy with radiation which is directed to the place of the tumor, and it may be used on top of surgery. The effect of radiotherapy and chemotherapy is to lessen the probability of recurrent cancer. The treatment given after surgery is known as adjuvant therapy. Neo adjuvant therapy is a situation
